familiars
A fylgja can be one of two things: the animal shape a person's spirit takes when he or she journeys, or a semi-autonomous human-shaped entity who is attached to a person's soul. Both types have strong connections with a person's ancestral line and can represent (or work on behalf of) an entire family. "
A familiar is a spiritual extension of one’s soul, manifesting as the form of an animal. It is a familiar’s duty to guide, protect, and assist those they are bound to. In turn, it is an individual’s duty to care for and protect their familiar for as long as they may live. Though it may have an independent life of its own, a familiar remains closely linked to its individual.
Though they take the form of animals, a familiar’s life extends beyond the form that it takes. Familiars live beyond the basic necessities of normal animals, needing not nourishment nor sleep. Their lifespan exceeds the span of their animal form, possessing the capacity to live as long as their mortal link remains in Fyrstrheim. Instead, they age alongside their soul-link, killed only by fatal blows or when their soul-linked individual passes. |
- New characters will receive their familiar upon entry to the group. Each character is randomly rolled 6 familiar forms from a bank of animal species located in Northern Germanic regions. The player will then choose one animal from this rolled list to act as the form for their familiar. Familiar re-rolls can be found and purchased in the shop.
- Familiars present themselves to their linked individual upon birth. When a character passes, their familiar will pass as well. However, if a familiar passes before their soul-linked individual, the character will not pass. Instead, the soul link will be lost forever and this character may never receive another familiar. The loss of a familiar is the loss of half the character's soul.
- A familiar ages at the same rate of their soul-linked player, regardless of species. They may only pass from fatal wounds or if the player dies.
- Spoken communication between a familiar and their linked individual is one-way. A familiar may understand directions and commands from their individual, however, a familiar cannot speak beyond the capacity of their animal form would typically be able to. Familiars do have deep thoughts, but they would avoid approaching other characters for the fear of dying. It would feel uncomfortable and vulnerable to have another feline touch a part of your soul, so the familiar would not act too uncharacteristically from it's animal counterpart. It is seen as a strong bond of trust if a familiar rests or is touched by another feline. Familiars also do not need to eat, though doing so will not harm them.
- While the design or color of a familiar may deviate from the natural pattern of their animal, their design must clearly still resemble its respective species. However, a familiar’s eyes must be the same color as their linked individual, a symbol of their linkage. Familiars must also be the same gender as the player, due to their souls being linked. Additionally, Familiars who's animal counterpart are commonly venomous and poisonous, will not have venom or poison.
- While there can be some variation, the size of a familiar should reflect the natural size of its animal form. Additionally, the size of a familiar may not be at or exceed the minimum height for each respective city;
- Forseti: 13'' | Laguz: 12'' | Eldur: 11'' | Stormr: 10''
- Familiars must follow all Bifrosts rules, including design and naming requirements.
