Nordic runes
The Elder Futhark is used for writing proto-Norse, consisting of 24 runes that are often arranged in three groups of eight. In Nordic lore, Odin impaled his heart with his own spear and hung on the world tree, Yggdrasil, for nine days and nights all to perceive the meaning of runes. Odin made a sacrifice to understand and convey the deep meaning of runes, and thought that if he could understand them, he would gain profound wisdom and power.
As such, runes are not merely letters, but they have potent virtues within themselves of a metaphysical or even magical nature. Runes are of great importance, often being carved into rune stones to commemorate ancestors or mark the graves of hero's.
In this world, a character is born with a rune assigned to their person, a common belief being that the rune would determine their attributes as a character and dictate the life they lead.
